Tottenham to benefit from UEFA ruling after Wenger request – Exclusive

Tottenham’s entire season hinges on their ability to beat Manchester United in the Europa League final.

Tottenham are 90 minutes away from their first major trophy in 17 years, which, when taking into account their shortcomings domestically, would be quite the achievement.

Under Ange Postecoglou, Spurs have thrived in the Europa League and will face a Manchester United side who have suffered a similar fate to them in the Premier League.

With that said, one of the two sides is going to reap the rewards from a UEFA rule that Arsene Wenger has called to change.

Europa League success will be crucial

Any hopes of qualifying for Europe via the league diminished months ago for both Manchester United and Tottenham, but one of the two will be in the Champions League next season.

The winner of the Europa League qualifies for the competition, leading Wenger to call for change [beIN SPORTS], and Paul Robinson agrees that the current ruling is unjust.

Speaking to Tottenham News, he said: “You can understand when a team like Manchester United, who are potentially going to finish 16th, and Tottenham 17th in the Premier League. It’s almost like a cheat code for a game. But those are the rules at the start of the season.

“You don’t change them now, towards the end of the season. If they are to be changed, you change them further down the line. And that’s a decision for UEFA.

Both sides have been poor this season.

“For Manchester United and Tottenham, the way that both teams have performed domestically this season, it would seem unjust. But those are the rules when you enter the competition. And everybody knows the rules at the start of the competition.

“You’re getting in by the back door, literally the back door. The thing is, you look at Tottenham and you look at Man United, do they have a squad for it? The honest side of it is, if you look at it now, they’re going to have to recruit heavily in the summer because do they have a squad of players now that are capable of coping in the Champions League? The answer to that is probably not.”

Tottenham cannot afford to waste European opportunity

Have Tottenham deserved a spot in next season’s Champions League? You could debate that from now until the start of the new campaign.

However, the reality is that they are 90 minutes away from achieving that, and they simply cannot let that opportunity slip.

A failure to win the Europa League would have several negative knock-on effects, and it would be massively detrimental to their ambitions in the future.
