Tottenham ‘to accept £75m bid for Cristian Romero’ as transfer news emerges

Cristian Romero’s near-four-year stay with Tottenham could come to an end this summer.

Romero has spent much of the season on the sidelines, which led to him aiming a subtle dig at the Tottenham medical team recently.

However, since his return, he hasn’t exactly been in fine form for club or country.

Romero made his first competitive appearance in over three months in the 2-2 Premier League draw with Bournemouth at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, 9 March, with Jamie Carragher tearing into the Spurs defender.

Meanwhile, the 26-year-old made another big mistake while in action for Argentina in their 4-1 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying victory over Brazil at the Estadio Monumental on Wednesday (26 March), with Tottenham fans urging the club to sell Romero as a result.

And it looks as though Daniel Levy might be able to cash in this summer after recent transfer news.

Atletico Madrid want to sign Romero from Tottenham

If he refuses to sign a contract, Tottenham will sell Romero this summer [GiveMeSport].

As a result, Spurs could offer the defender £200,000-a-week in one last attempt to convince him to sign a new deal.

However, Atletico Madrid are now showing interest.

And Romero is reportedly open to the possibility of joining Diego Simeone’s side in Spain [talkSPORT].

Therefore, ex-Spurs scout Bryan King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – has speculated what kind of money Levy would be looking for to sell.

“I’m sure if anything did happen, then the fee would be a big fee,” King said.

“I’m sure Tottenham would accept anything between £75-85million for Romero. However, if the club want to win anything, they’ve got to keep their best players.

“It is the same old story. When players go away for international duty, these stories start to come out. The end of the season is approaching; let’s generate some interest. However, do Tottenham want to keep hold of him?

‘The only way they’re going to win something is by keeping their best players. If I were Tottenham, unless Romero is very upset and doesn’t like life in London or at Tottenham – which six months ago he seemed too – I can’t see any reason why they’d put him up for sale.”

Tottenham need to convince Romero to sign a new contract

If Romero isn’t willing to sign a new deal, the club will have little choice but to cash in.

However, there is no doubt that Spurs are a better team with Romero in the starting lineup. Therefore, they should do what they can to convince him to extend his stay at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
