Tottenham tipped to complete ‘one-off’ Ivan Toney transfer as Brentford development emerges

Ivan Toney is “in the ilk of Harry Kane” and would be a statement signing for Tottenham, Paul Robinson has said.

The Brentford striker, 28, is set to be a hot property in the upcoming summer transfer window and Sunsport reported (19 March) that Spurs, Chelsea and West Ham are preparing to make their move in the coming months.

Spurs sold record goalscorer Kane to Bayern Munich last September and have played the majority of the campaign without an out-and-out striker as captain Son Heung-min and Richarlison have led the line.

Former Spurs keeper Robinson think the club might break the mould of not playing huge fees if a player of Toney’s calibre is available because of the difference he could make to the team.

Speaking to Tottenham News, Robinson said: “From a Tottenham point of view and Tottenham fans’ point of view they could get very excited if they’re in the mix for Ivan Toney.

“I think he’s a great strker, he’s a natural finisher, scored a lot of goals in a Brentford side that’s always in the middle to lower half of the Premier League, (albeit they) competed higher up the season before.

“But I just think he’s a quality player, he’s in the ilk of Harry Kane type striker, out-and-out number nine, works hard, makes intelligent runs.

“If you look at the players at Tottenham with Son, with James Maddison, the assists they’d get from the intelligent runs for goals, listen if Tottenham are in the mix for a player like that it’s exciting times.

“You look at other players (linked to Tottenham), Raphinha, would you pay £60-70million for a player like Raphinha? I don’t think he’s a £60-£70m player who would have an impact as such as Ivan Toney.

“Tottenham don’t necessarily go and pay great big transfer fees for just anybody. But if there’s an opportunity to get Ivan Toney at the club then it might be a one-off situation because that’s someone who would really come in and make an impact on the starting XI.

“You look at the amount of goals Harry Kane’s scored over the years, you take his goals out of the team at some point that team is going to struggle for goals.

“Son and Richarlison have done excellently well this seaosn, especially Son picking up the goalscoring mantle, but neither of them are out-and-out number nines and to bring someone like Toney in would be a real statement and a move to the next level.”

Ivan Toney would be a huge signing for Tottenham

Spurs have made great progress this season under Ange Postecoglou, even accounting for the fact they lost Kane so close to the start of the campaign.

But you do feel that at some point they could really do with a focal point up top and a striker who will be a regular source of goals.

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium

Toney has proven that he can mix it with the best strikers in the Premier League and with the playing of forwards Tottenham have he will have plenty of opportunities to score.

If the chance is there to bring him to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium then it is an opportunity the club should absolutely be exploring.
