Tottenham: Time at Spurs is up for Giovani Lo Celso amid contract status in North London
John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose believes Tottenham will sell Giovani Lo Celso this summer with the midfielder set to enter the final year of his contract.
Lo Celso arrived at Tottenham initially on loan from Real Betis for a fee of £15million, with the North London club making the 27-year-old’s stay permanent a few months later for £27.3million, representing a total investment of £42.3million (via The Standard, 28 January 2020).
It is an investment which hasn’t paid off, with the playmaker making just 99 appearances during his near-five year stay with the club, while twice being sent out on loan.
Despite his continued struggles under Ange Postecoglou, Lo Celso continues to be selected for Argentina and played twice for his country during the March international break.
And Wenham believes this can only be a good thing, speculating that Spurs will look to offload Lo Celso this summer.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham, the founder of reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose, said: “Lo Celso got some minutes for Argentina and grabbed a goal as well, which is good for his confidence.
“For me though, when it comes to Lo Celso, it is just about him building up his value ahead of selling him in the summer when he enters the final 12 months of his contract.
“He just can’t perform consistently in the Premier League, he has moments of brilliance every now and again, but he always breaks down and he is never available.
“I am therefore glad he got some game time with Argentina because it allowed him to hopefully impress some other clubs ahead of a permanent departure in the summer, which will be another important step in our rebuild under Postecoglou.”
Giovani Lo Celso is unlikely to remain with Ange Postecoglou at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer
Lo Celso has shown quality at times for Postecoglou this season, but as Wenham pointed out, his form has been nowhere near consistent enough.
With James Maddison having been signed by the club, minutes have been hard to come by for the former La Liga star, and even when Maddison was injured, Lo Celso still found himself benched at times by Postecoglou.

In truth, this has been a nightmare transfer which all parties involved will likely be keen to forget.
What Daniel Levy won’t be keen to do is lose even more money on the Argentinian, and with a new contract offer seeming unlikely, it appears a cut-price deal for Lo Celso could well be on the cards this summer.
