Tottenham surprise as Todd Kline unexpectedly quits role amid Fabrizio Romano update
Paul Robinson has reacted to Todd Kline’s Tottenham exit with a view to joining Chelsea by advocating trust in those at the top of the club.
The Telegraph reported on 5 February that the American was quitting as the club’s chief commercial officer, having failed to secure a naming rights deal for the new stadium.
Spurs placed the former Miami Dolphins man on gardening leave, after which he is expected to head to Stamford Bridge to play a “big part” in their stadium plans.
But BBC Sport pundit Robinson suggests that any restructuring at Tottenham will be for the club’s benefit and doesn’t see the departure as a major blow in North London.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News he said: “It’s a move that I was unaware of. I think it very much doesn’t impact the playing side of the club and I don’t think Ange and his players will be wasting too much time worrying about it in all honesty.
“From the club’s point of view, you trust the people who run it. The naming rights for the stadium have been available for a long time but the deal hasn’t been done, whoever’s doorstep that lands at.
“But for the club, if they’re restructuring internally it can only be for their benefit.”
Kline exit to Chelsea to the benefit of Tottenham
The Telegraph reported that there was a high turnover of staff in Kline’s department, with those leaving not necessarily having jobs to move into, which suggests there was less than complete harmony in his time at the club.
And while he secured other sponsorship deals it is hard to look past the fact that the glittering stadium still doesn’t have a rights deal secured, so it could be viewed as another odd move on Chelsea’s part rather than a particular loss on Spurs’.
The club have been drawing plaudits on the business side of matters otherwise, overtaking Chelsea along the way, so will presumably have a succession plan underway, but it is still what happens on the pitch that has the biggest impact on the rivalry between the two London clubs.
In other Tottenham news, a “masterstroke” Spurs signing looks to have failed at the club already after a Postecoglou decision.
