Son Heung-min was “unlucky” to have three goals ruled out for being offside, even though the Tottenham forward fell a victim of Aston Villa’s high line, according to Alan Hutton.
The 31-year-old forward failed to score for a third consecutive Premier League game in the 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa at The Lane on Sunday (26 November), but it wasn’t through a lack of effort.
Son saw two of his goals chalked off due to him being offside while another was disallowed as Brennan Johnson found himself behind the Villa defence before assisting the South Korean. However, none of the calls were excatly close.
Hutton believes Son’s issues in front of goal were a result of Villa’s high defenisve line because he kept on finding himself on the wrong side of the away side’s rearguard.
“We’ve spoken about it before with high lines and players getting in behind the Villa defence. It creates opportunities but sometimes you have to take that risk where you’re borderline – it’s very close,” Hutton told Tottenham News.
“We saw it with Son. But this is why VAR is there. Some of the decisions are very, very tight.
“You saw with the Ollie Watkins one as well with how tight that was, we’re talking about an inch.
“Son is unlucky with a hat-trick of offside goals but it’s one of those, what do you do? It doesn’t count and that’s why the technology is there.”
Hutton played for both Tottenham and Aston Villa in his playing days.
He thought the game was an exciting one but admits Spurs were unlucky to have suffered a third consecutive defeat in the Premier League.
“Overall, it was a great game. Tottenham started off really, really well and were unfortunate to not be 2-0 up early on,” Hutton added.
“It didn’t quite work out but you know Aston Villa are going to go into a game without ever giving anything away. And that’s what happened.”
