Tottenham stance on Milan Škriniar transfer mooted amid Aston Villa speculation
Tottenham and Aston Villa have both been credited with an interest in Paris Saint-Germain centre-back Milan Škriniar.
That is according to L’Équipe, who reported on 7 January that Aston Villa and Spurs had positioned themselves to sign Škriniar, who is expected to leave PSG this month due to a lack of game time.
Ange Postecoglou’s side had previously been urged to sign the Slovak, with an expectation that PSG could even agree to subsidise the defender’s wages to facilitate a move.
However, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – thinks too much time has now passed for this transfer to make sense.
“I think if this transfer was going to happen, it would have happened earlier,” Wenham said.
“Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are just a matter of weeks away from returning to action now. Therefore, it is hardly a big sales pitch for a defender coming in to tell them that they’ll be fourth choice pretty much straightaway other than a couple of games at first.
“In addition, Archie Gray and Radu Drăgușin are doing okay at the moment, so I don’t think there is as much of a need for a new centre-back anymore.”
Tottenham to miss out on Paris Saint-Germain defender Milan Škriniar?
Postecoglou could have used another centre-back in recent weeks, with Romero, van de Ven and Davies all sidelined. However, it does feel as though it is too little too late.
All three defenders will likely be back within the coming weeks. Therefore, while some might argue that the club could still use another player in that position, it wouldn’t make much sense to go out and sign a high-profile player like Škriniar – who is likely on big wages – just to act as cover for a couple of matches.

That money could be better put to use elsewhere, with Daniel Levy already proving this month that he is ready to improve Spurs’ squad.
In other Tottenham news, the club have opened talks to sign a Manchester United player this month.
