Tottenham: Sky Sports pundit reacts as Ryan Sessegnon hit by another Spurs nightmare

Ryan Sessegnon’s future at Tottenham has become impossible to predict when he is never able to play regularly due to injury, says Paul Robinson.

The Sky Sports pundit reacted after the 23-year-old was forced to leave on crutches when his return to action with the under-21s lasted all of 33 minutes before yet another hamstring issue [Football London, 19 February].

The former Fulham sensation has only managed 57 appearances for the club in nearly five seasons, and missed close to a year between last season and this after surgery, before suffering a set back in January after a brief appearance against Burnley in the FA Cup.

That remains his only action under Ange Postecoglou and in that context, Robinson says there is no way of knowing whether the Englishman can be part of the Australian’s set-up when he, like the manager, hasn’t been able to assess him at all.

He exclusively told Tottenham News: “It’s a difficult one when a player keeps picking up injuries, there’s nothing you can do. You can’t really predict or assess his future until a player’s fully fit and he’s given an opportunity.

“He’s had spells in the side where he’s played well and we’ve seen the type of player that he is, whether it be at left-back, left wing-back, or an attacking position anywhere down that left-hand side of the pitch.

“He poses a good threat and he knows his defensive responsibilities as well. But when he’s had such injury problems and such stop-start opportunities since he’s come into the side since Spurs signed him.

“He hasn’t really been able to put a full season together and it’s very difficult to predict anything for a player like that who is so injury-prone.”

Ryan Sessegnon prospects under Ange Postecoglou a mystery after latest Tottenham injury blow

Destiny Udogie has made the left-back spot his own but Sessegnon would in theory be a better like-for-like back-up than Ben Davies if he could ever get to show his new manager what he can do.

Further forward there is, for now, still an uncertain picture on the left of the attack with loanee Timo Werner getting regular starts but not guaranteed to be with the club long-term.

But after a full year of injury hell there is a real danger that Sessegnon gets bypassed if another transfer window arrives before he can contribute, with Postecoglou not able to wait around in hope.

The former Celtic boss has already jettisoned players that don’t fit, and more are expected to go, but for now Sessegnon remains in limbo due to his fitness issues.
