Tottenham: ‘Silly’ £100m Chelsea PSR development may boost hopes of Conor Gallagher transfer

Tottenham may have received a boost to their hopes of securing a transfer for Chelsea star Conor Gallagher after financial fair play developments at Stamford Bridge, according to Alan Hutton.

Spurs have been long-time admirers of the 24-year-old midfielder and reportedly remain convinced he’s the right fit for Ange Postecoglou’s squad ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window [GiveMeSport, 18 February].

Reports from The Telegraph (7 March) that the Blues have fresh doubts over their ability to meet profit and sustainability rules after it was revealed they made a £90.1million loss before tax in the year leading up to 30 June 2023.

For Chelsea to remain within PSR limits, they will have to sell £100million worth of players. While that could help Spurs sign Gallagher, Hutton believes Mauricio Pochettino’s side would be “silly” not to tie the midfielder down.

“They’d be silly not to [tie him down],” Hutton told Tottenham News.

“For what he’s done this season, he covers every blade of grass and he’s exactly what you need at times, just that kind of battler in midfield. He’s technically gifted as well, he’s not just a runner.

“They’re talking about big money as well, would Chelsea sell him to a rival? For example, at Spurs, he probably makes their squad and starting team even better even though it would be a fight to get into the team.

“For a player who has been a standout at Chelsea, why wouldn’t you just get it done? That being said, with their FFP situation, if you are to sell him for big money that’s all profit because he came through the youth side.

“So it really depends on that to see where his future lies.”

Will Tottenham be able to complete summer transfer move for Chelsea star Conor Gallagher?

As Hutton suggested, Gallagher would immediately improve Postecoglou’s squad and likely Spurs’ starting XI. Therefore, it seems only natural that Tottenham should do all that they can to secure the England international’s signature.

Daniel Levy’s management of Spurs has meant that Postecoglou doesn’t have to worry about PSR issues unlike the majority of clubs in the Premier League and that could put them in an excellent position to exploit other team’s weaknesses.

Hopefully, Postecoglou can add another quality addition to his already star-studded midfield, especially if the Australian could lose one of his current players in the summer transfer window.

In other Tottenham news, Hutton has suggested that Spurs may “cut their losses” and sell Djed Spence in the summer transfer window
