Tottenham set for economic boost after new NFL deal signed – Finance Expert
We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Tottenham...
Dan Plumley insists Spurs will be getting an economic boost from the NFL deal signed to host American football at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
It was revealed by the NFL that the new deal until 2029-30, along with other events at the stadium, has already delivered a £344million boost to the local economy every year.
The finance expert warned that multipliers will be used to get to that figure, and although Spurs will benefit financially too, it won’t be near that number.

“They’ll be getting a boost,” he exclusively told Tottenham News. “Whether or not it will be that high is unlikely.
“Obviously, they will get the direct revenue benefit from the deals they have signed and the ticket structure, and all of the spend inside the stadium as an example.
“The tricky thing with wider economic impact is what tends to happen is they are based on multipliers anyway, so because you can’t speak to everyone that has been to the stadium or has travelled in from overseas or stayed in the region.
“You are wider-spending the area that wouldn’t have been there had that event not taken place from out-of-town attendees, so what tends to happen is, you get a sample of those and there will then be a multiplier applied.

“There is often an air of caution around those figures anyway, particularly with that £344million, I have no doubt it will have been lucrative for the wider economy, but we have to bear in mind there may be a multiplier on that number, and for Spurs, it’s more simple, it’s the money they will generate from the deals they have got and then any spend associated with people at the stadium.
“Of course, it’s a boost to Spurs, it won’t be that big of a boost given how these things are worked out, but it is still a considerable amount to have that event in town.”
