Tottenham set for £17.1m+ boost amid fresh Europa League development – Finance Expert

Tottenham are set to receive a £17.1m boost if they only qualify for the Europa League next season as Dan Plumley offered a “brutally honest” verdict on their feelings on the competition.

Spurs have been chasing a Champions League finish all season but after Borussia Dortmund’s win over Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday 1 May, the extra place will go to Germany and fifth-place in the Premier League will go to the Europa League.

And while the north London club are set to receive a financial boost having not played in Europe at all this season, football finance expert Plumley admitted it is a “blow” considering their initial targets for the season.

“I think internally, being brutally honest and looking at how the season has played out, they’ll probably see it as an opportunity missed, for sure,” he exclusively told Tottenham News.

“And we know that the Champions League is far more lucrative than the Europa League, but that said Europa League is still better than nothing and coming from the position of no European football, Europa League can still be beneficial.

“It can generate for you if you go deep into the tournament. There’ll be a new distribution pot this year linked to the new format, but even with the early highlights we’re seeing from that you’re still looking at an English team for the Europa League being able to generate circa €20m (£17.1m) if you can go deep into that competition, which Spurs obviously will be confident of.

“So it’s a blow in terms of Champions League versus Europa League and expectation setting, but €20m (£17.1m) is better than nothing so even then it’s still going to be a boost for Spurs if they finish in Europe, given they’ve not had that this season.”

Tottenham on course for success under Ange Postecoglou

It’s been a long season and while the ultimate goal was securing Champions League football and that seems highly unlikely now, the season has been an overall success.

A fast start was hampered by major injury problems to key players throughout the season, and the manager now knows far more about the squad he has and what changes he needs to make to improve.

The financial situation of the club is in a good place, and there will be transfer targets lined up knowing that Champions League football hasn’t been secured.

As Plumley says an extra £17.1m isn’t something to be frowned at and it will help somewhere down the line for Tottenham, and the extra games in the schedule will help prepare for the future.

The club are in a good place right now and success under Postecoglou is certainly something that fans can see on the horizon, so this should be seen as part of the journey rather than a roadblock to the destination.
