Tottenham ready to spend again as Premier League clubs worry about FFP – Finance Expert

We’re delighted to welcome football finance expert Dr Daniel Plumley as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Tottenham...

Dan Plumley has insisted that the financial plan at Tottenham is part of the bigger picture as everyone else in the Premier League worries about FFP.

Spurs are the only club to seal a big-money permanent January signing in the form of Radu Dragusin, with other clubs previously overspending, leaving them tight on FFP.

The finance expert admitted that Spurs have never been in those categories and the new stadium is putting them in an even stronger position to spend again if they need to.

“It’s part of the bigger picture,” he exclusively told Tottenham News when asked if the previous lack of spending means they can go again.

“You’ve got everyone else who is really tight on FFP, a lot of clubs have overspent and Spurs have never been in that category.

They have always been relatively okay financially to spend if they want to, but for whatever reason, haven’t gone down that road and that has led to criticisms of course, of not really pushing for sporting success, especially at the time where they were challenging for the league title and just missed out on a Champions League.

That will always be levelled at Spurs, but not just that environment over the past few years and navigating FFP, but the benefit now of the new stadium really starting to pay dividends and again, that was always in the long-term plan because if you look at the amount of matchday revenue Spurs now earn against where they were, it’s considerable growth and it’s putting them at the top of the income tree for matchday revenue in the Premier League.

“All the other connected sporting events and commercial partnerships they’ve got linked to that, that then goes into the mix on how you grow the squad in the future.

So, there’s the kind of narrative of what everyone else is doing and it being a good time to be in that position to spend, but it also links to the long-term plan of the club.”
