Tottenham points deduction mooted after Premier League announcement last week

Bryan King believes Tottenham could be at risk of a points deduction after a Premier League announcement last week.

The ex-Spurs scout claims that other top-flight clubs will be looking over their shoulder after it was announced that Everton had been deducted two points for a breach of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules (via Sky Sports News, 9 April).

It was reported earlier this season that Tottenham were facing serious allegations of breaching transfer rules after having dealt with an unlicensed agent during Jermaine Defoe’s £7.5million transfer to Portsmouth in 2008 (via The Times, 21 November).

While no action was taken at the time, the Football Association were reportedly prepared to review the allegations, with previous such offences having resulted in points deductions.

And King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – feels that officials in North London will be on high alert after the Premier League’s announcement to take points from Everton.

“I would imagine every club in England must be twitching their fingers and thinking ‘Are they going to come after us, what have we done wrong?'” King said.

“You just think of Tottenham and the case of the unlicensed agent in the Jermaine Defoe transfer. Is that not an offence?

“Who is to say that Spurs won’t be deducted points or slapped with a big fine?”

Daniel Levy right to sweat at Tottenham after recent Premier League action

Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy had probably forgotten all about the inner workings of Defoe’s transfer to Portsmouth back in 2008, but it is clear that the FA has not.

While there is nothing at this point to suggest that Spurs will be deducted points, that doesn’t mean no action will be taken in the coming months or perhaps next season.

The Premier League are clearly keen to crack down on Profit and Sustainability breaches, and the FA could decide to follow suit.

While a few months have passed since this revelation, it was reported that the FA were keen to look into the Defoe case, and these things do take time.

Everton’s points deduction would have served as a reminder to Levy and Tottenham that they are not out of the woods themselves yet.
