Tottenham likely to sanction Alfie Devine Plymouth return next season – Spurs Expert
Tottenham midfielder Alfie Devine should spend another season on loan in the Championship, according to John Wenham.
After a successful loan in EFL League One with Port Vale during the first half of the 2023/24 season, Devine was recalled to Spurs and sent to Championship side Plymouth Argyle for the remainder of the season.
Since making the switch he has started six matches in the Championship, and made one further appearance from the bench, grabbing two assists in this time.
Devine is continuing to improve, and Wenham would like to see him build on this momentum next season.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “I have been really pleased with Devine’s progress this season.
“He is getting plenty of minutes under his belt and he has been involved in a couple of goals as well.
“Devine is making fantastic progress and I think it would be best for his development if he did another season in the Championship next year.
“That way he could get another 45 games under his belt, ideally at Plymouth.
“If they’ve got the same manager and they want to keep playing him then he should definitely return to the club on loan next season.”
Is Alfie Devine ready to break into the Tottenham team?
There is no doubt that Devine has ability, something that Plymouth boss Ian Foster made perfectly clear when the midfielder arrived at the club.
Foster said (via Plymouth Herald, 17 January), “I know how talented he is, I know how hard-working he is, and it gives me a little bit of a head start because he knows the role and he knows exactly what I will be asking him to do.”
After half a season on loan in the Championship, some supporters might believe Devine should be offered an opportunity at Spurs next season.
Ange Postecoglou will certainly be keen to take a closer look at the 19-year-old in pre-season training, but another season on loan in the Championship could do Devine the world of good.

He will turn 20 this summer, and by spending another season away from the club, he could return to North London ahead of the 2025/26 season with far more experience than most other players his age.
Considering how young he is, there is certainly no rush, and those at Hotspur Way must ensure they get Devine’s development spot on.
