Tottenham: Lawyer expects Daniel Levy to lose out on £30m Spurs investment after latest update

John Wenham believes Daniel Levy is set to lose out on “a £30million investment” after the “very sad” story of Ryan Sessegnon at Tottenham.

Sessegnon joined Spurs from Fulham almost five years ago for a fee of £25million in a deal which saw Josh Onomah head to Craven Cottage (BBC Sport, 8 August 2019).

Having joined the North London side at the age of 19, Sessegnon has failed to kick on in his career with multiple injury issues holding him back and limiting him to just 57 total appearances for Spurs, which includes just the one this season.

After finally returning from injury off the bench as Spurs beat Burnley 1-0 in the FA Cup third round (5 January), the 23-year-old was sidelined once again while in action for the Under-21s and has been forced to undergo his second surgery in 12 months.

With Sessegnon set to enter the final year of his Spurs contract in June, Wenham believes that Levy will struggle to make any return on what was once a big-money investment.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham, a Litigation Lawyer with over 10 years of experience in the legal field, said: “With the way his career has gone, not only is it very sad for Sessegnon, but it is also very sad for Tottenham and Levy.

“They invested a lot of money into Sessegnon, paying a fee of £25million and Josh Onomah, who I know was valued at £5million at the time.

“That is a £30million investment which they aren’t going to get much back on at all, if anything.

“It is hard to blame Spurs because on paper it looked like a fantastic bit of business at the time, but it just hasn’t worked out and hopefully for Sessegnon, he can get back to his best, wherever that might be.”

Does Ryan Sessegnon have a future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium?

After yet another injury setback, it looks unlikely that Sessegnon will feature for Ange Postecoglou between now and the end of the season.

He might get some minutes here and there in pre-season, but that is about the best he can hope for at this point before the 2024/25 campaign gets underway.

Selling Sessegnon this summer could prove to be difficult, but Spurs are also unlikely to offer him a new contract which leaves the club in a difficult position as they risk losing a player they once spent so much on for free.

While no one is to blame, Levy will feel incredibly frustrated by what is shaping up to be a big loss for the Spurs chairman.

Sessegnon has found the back of the net four times for Spurs, meaning each of his goals cost Levy roughly £7.5million, not to mention the fees that were spent on the full-back’s wages.
