Tottenham: King speculates no way back for Djed Spence despite his ‘Big’ admission
Ex-Tottenham employee Bryan King believes that Djed Spence has no future in North London and should “start looking for another club.”
Spence has struggled ever since he arrived at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, joining from Middlesbrough in a five-year deal worth an initial fee of £12.5million (Sky Sports News, 19 July 2022).
He has had limited opportunities with Spurs and after his season-long loan with Leeds United was cut short, the right-back was sent to Serie A side Genoa for the remainder of the season.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with The Athletic (8 March), Spence has revealed that he has not given up on making a name for himself at Tottenham.
“I want to play for Tottenham, I want to be a big part of the plan but we’ve got to see how things go, have a discussion with the manager and everyone.
“It’s a big difference with the new manager, I did pre-season with him — he’s a good guy, he has good training sessions, he likes to play football, it’s a new environment at the club. I think everyone’s enjoying it and doing well, I’m pleased for them.”
Despite this admission, King believes that Spence would be better suited to seek a fresh start.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, King said: “If I was Spence I would start looking for another club.
“I don’t think he has a future at Tottenham. He says that he wants to play, but of course, he will say that. He is going to have to do something very special at Genoa to catch Ange Postecoglou’s eye.
“If he doesn’t, then he will just become another Spurs player on loan. It has never worked out for him since he moved to North London, but the writing is on the wall.
“As good of a contract as I am sure he has at Tottenham if he wants to get back to playing I would suggest that he moves on.”
Does Djed Spece have a future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium under Ange Postecoglou?
Spence is still 23 and there is no doubt that he has time on his hands.
However, fighting for a place at Hotspur Way could prove to be very difficult, especially considering Pedro Porro’s exceptional form this season.
While some Spurs supporters will admire Spence’s drive to rescue his time with the club, it looks incredibly unlikely at this stage.

If he wants to play regularly again then a move away should be his priority this summer.
In July it will be two years since the defender joined the club and in that time he has managed just six appearances under two managers and two interim managers, which is a clear sign that he is not the right fit for Tottenham.
In other Tottenham news, King believes that one big-name Spurs star could be on the move this summer.
