Tottenham: King reacts as ‘Very Unusual’ Timo Werner transfer update emerges from Germany
Ex-Tottenham employee Bryan King believes that Timo Werner must “do more” to make his stay in North London permanent after a “very unusual” transfer update emerged from Germany.
Spurs signed Werner on a six-month loan deal from RB Leipzig in January (Tottenham Hotspur Official Website, 9 January).
Ange Postecoglou’s side have the option to make the transfer permanent for a fee of £14.5million. However, according to the German news outlet BILD (13 March), that option expires on 14 June, which means Spurs must decide on whether or not they want to sign Werner permanently by that date.
BILD’s report describes this clause as “very unusual and early”, with RB Leipzig keen for Werner’s transfer situation not to drag out across the summer.
With Werner reportedly keen to make his stay at Hotspur Way permanent, King believes that the German hasn’t done enough to convince Spurs as of yet.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, King said: “I believe the clause is fair enough, it is sensible in my opinion.
“To make his stay with Tottenham permanent, he still has to do more for me, really you want him scoring every other match at least.
“Chelsea fell into a trap when they signed him for big money and he never ended up producing for them.
“Spurs will see how he does between now and the end of the season and then they will have some time to make their decision. If he does produce more, it could end up being a decent move for Tottenham for a reasonable fee.”
Timo Werner beginning to find his feet under Ange Postecoglou at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
Werner might not have proven his worth to Postecoglou just yet, but he is certainly starting to find some form in the Premier League.
After scoring in Spurs’ 3-1 home win against Crystal Palace (2 March), the 27-year-old would have been frustrated as he was dropped to the bench against Aston Villa on Sunday (10 March).
However, he demonstrated his strong mentality as he came on at Villa Park and found the net as Spurs thrashed their top-four rivals 4-0.

If Werner can continue to keep finding the back of the net as he has done in recent weeks, Spurs might suddenly look at the £14.5million fee for the forward as a bargain.
