Tottenham insider calls for VAR to be scrapped after what happened against Arsenal on Sunday

Bryan King believes VAR needs to be abandoned after what happened in the North London derby between Tottenham and Arsenal.

The ex-Spurs scout feels that the technology is not currently being utilised in the right way.

It comes after Micky van de Ven saw his goal disallowed for offside following a VAR review as Spurs were beaten 3-2 by the Gunners at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday (28 April).

And King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – wasn’t convinced by the decision.

“Spurs’ disallowed goal looked very tight, to me it looked as if Gabriel was playing van de Ven onside,” King said.

“When teams score there isn’t much point of celebrating anymore. Ange Postecoglou was complaining about VAR after the game, and I agree with him.

“It isn’t the referee on the pitch making the decisions anymore, which is taking the excitement out of football.

“Unless they can sort things out then VAR needs to be scrapped because at the moment they can’t handle it.”

VAR continues to cause more problems than solutions after Tottenham against Arsenal

Ironically, VAR was brought into football to prevent half-time chats between pundits being centred around refereeing decisions or mistakes.

But if anything, it feels as if more time has been spent speaking about that exact topic since the technology was introduced.

Whether or not van de Ven was offside against Arsenal on Sunday, it doesn’t change the amount of mistakes that have been made this season.

While VAR certainly has its benefits when used correctly, it isn’t being used correctly, and something needs to be done to avoid further incidents of controversy.
