Tottenham heeded warning after ‘backlash’, as pundit drops ‘wake-up call’ verdict following green-light decision

We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…

Tottenham and the five other Premier League clubs who were initially involved with the European Super League have wisely heeded the warning from fan “backlash” but a ruling last week remains a “wake-up call” to FIFA and UEFA, Paul Robinson has said.

The European Court of Justice ruled on 21 December that FIFA and UEFA unlawfully blocked the creation of a breakaway competition following an initial announcement in 2021.

Consequently, A22 – the Super League founders – announced a new format that would see 64 clubs compete across three different divisions.

Spurs (official website), Chelsea, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Manchester City all said they would not be involved, with the six having reneged on the initial proposal after widespread condemnation.

Former Spurs goalkeeper Robinson thinks Spurs have made the right call but does not see the idea of the Super League going away anytime soon.

Speaking to Tottenham News he said: “It’s in line with other clubs, I mean they keep kicking this can down the road and it keeps coming back.

“The Champions League has been gradually extended and extended and extended to a Super League in a way. But it seems Barcelona and Real Madrid are pushing this, all the other clubs have immediately distanced themselves from it, we saw the fan backlash from it last time.

“Jurgen Klopp said it’s maybe a bit of a wake-up call for UEFA and FIFA that they haven’t got full dominance, that there’s another opportunity that could come in and they can’t just every dance to their tune there may well be another option.

“But the clubs have all united and stayed strong and rebuffed the Super League as you would expect after the backlash last time.

“The product we’ve got in the Premier League is the best in the world, there’s always been talk of Rangers and Celtic wanting to join the Premier League, the Champions League was brought in so the best teams in Europe could play against each other. The Premier League as a product is the strongest product in the world, our teams don’t need to leave what we’ve got.
