Tottenham: Finance Expert reacts as new losses posted in accounts

Dan Plumley has insisted that it is not unusual for big Premier League clubs to be posting losses after the latest Tottenham accounts were published.

Spurs posted losses of £86.8million for their 2022/23 accounts, taking their losses over the last three years up to £232million.

The football finance expert admitted that a lot of that is linked to the new stadium, which is exempt from PSR, something which needs to be looked at in terms of the bigger picture at Spurs.

“We have seen Spurs generate significant profits in the past,” he exclusively told Tottenham News.

“If you look and drill down deeper into the number that we’ve seen in this set of accounts, a lot of that is depreciation linked to the stadium, there is a lot of player amortisation in there, they’ve had a big net spend in that year as well.

All of those things factor into that loss and of course, in relation to the stadium, that is exempt from PSR as well.

We should be looking at those figures, extracting them and re-running some of the numbers, it’s conceivable you could do that and still make a loss, even as a big Premier League club.

A lot of that is linked to the stadium, and if you look at the revenue uplift from the stadium and in time what that will do, you have to balance that as well.

It’s not unusual to see fairly significant losses at some of the big clubs, but a lot of that is wrapped up in the stadium at Spurs and we have to look at that in terms of the bigger picture of the club.”

Tottenham announce losses in latest accounts

With all of the controversy surrounding the profit and sustainability regulations in the Premier League right now, it is relaxing to know that Spurs are flying safe.

Everton and Nottingham Forest have been hit by points deductions, with Manchester City and Chelsea also facing that threat, with matters more in hand in North London.
