Tottenham fans have vendetta against Matty Cash after ‘huge blow’ to Rodrigo Bentancur in Aston Villa loss – Sky Sports pundit
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist as each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium…
Paul Robinson doesn’t believe there is a “personal vendetta” between Matty Cash and Tottenham players but admits there is now one against him from the Spurs fans after the injury to Rodrigo Bentancur.
The Sky Sports pundit accepts that the “huge blow” that sees the Uruguayan ruled out again for weeks was a risk that is always present in every game, and doesn’t feel the Aston Villa full-back has anything against Spurs.
But after his foul added to Ange Postecoglou’s major injury worries, and with Matt Doherty previously ruled out after a challenge from the Poland international two seasons ago [The Athletic], the former England keeper has no doubt the Tottenham fanbase will hold Cash responsible.

Robinson exclusively told Tottenham News: “I don’t think there’s any type of personal vendetta. It’s difficult from a Spurs fan’s point of view and you’re always going to lay blame at the door of the culprit who made the tackle.
“Unfortunately in football these things happen. It’s very, very difficult to be personal and I don’t think there’s anything between Matty Cash and Bentancur or Matty Cash and the Spurs fans.
“There’s certainly a vendetta one way now because of the way the Spurs fans feel but that’s the risk you run as a professional, crossing the white line, every time you play.
“But listen, he’s going to be a huge loss. We’ve only just got him back and to lose him now until February it’s a huge blow.”

It is inevitable for Cash to be unpopular with supporters given he is now associated with two significant injuries, even if he surely didn’t set out to hurt Bentancur with what was a rash foul in the 2-1 defeat on 26 November.
That it comes at a time when the manager is already scrambling for squad options, and results are suffering, only heightens the strength of feeling.
But it is ultimately a fact of life in football so the reaction to Cash can’t get out of hand, even if Postecoglou is left picking up the pieces of yet another extended lay off.
