Tottenham Expert: Under-21 ace Matthew Craig ‘has time on his hands’ to make an impression at Spurs
Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…
John Wenham believes that midfielder Matthew Craig still has time to make an impression at Tottenham after securing a loan switch to Doncaster Rovers.
Spurs recently announced that the 20-year-old would be joining up with the EFL League Two side on loan until the end of the season (Tottenham Hotspur Official Website, 9 January).
Craig has played 11 times for the club’s Under-21s this season, captaining the side on multiple occasions.
Despite becoming a regular feature for the Under-21s since progressing through Spurs’ youth ranks, Craig is yet to be offered a real first-team opportunity in North London, although Wenham believes he still has a chance to make an impression in North London.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “Craig has gone out on loan to Doncaster Rovers, which I think will be a really good experience and opportunity for him to get some senior minutes under his belt.
“He’s one of those players who I don’t think would look out of place if you were to drop him into an EFL League Two side. I think he will do just fine as a holding midfielder in that division.
“Hopefully this experience helps to attract interest in him from higher up the leagues so that he can secure another loan move next summer.

“He’s under contract until 2026 with Tottenham, so he still has time on his hands to make his name at the club.”
In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou has another youth sensation to keep an eye on after an Under-18 forward netted in the FA Youth Cup.
