Tottenham Expert relaxed despite what ‘Brilliant’ Cristian Romero admitted on talkSPORT
John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose believes Tottenham ace Cristian Romero should be shown “leeway” after the defender admitted he would like to represent Argentina at the Olympics.
With Romero already set to compete at the Copa America this summer with Argentina, the 25-year-old has now admitted he would also be keen to head to the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
Romero said via talkSPORT (26 March), “I never had the chance to be in the Olympic Games and I would love to. Obviously, it doesn’t depend on me, but if you want to take me I am available for the Argentine national team.”
The Olympics end the week before the 2024/25 Premier League season is scheduled to begin, and while some concern has emerged over the defender’s admission, Wenham believes there is no reason to panic.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham, the founder of reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose, said: “It would be a loss, but it is not as if he would be on holiday, he would be playing regular football with Argentina.
“Therefore, he would return to Tottenham ready to go.
“We signed Radu Dragusin for a reason, and this would be an amazing opportunity for Romero.
“He has been brilliant for Tottenham, and he joined us at a time when we were playing in the UEFA Europa Conference League, so I do think we need to give him some leeway and respect the loyalty he has shown us.”
Cristian Romero is a key player for Ange Postecoglou at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
It is understandable why Ange Postecoglou or other people connected with Spurs wouldn’t want Romero to compete at the Olympics.
The World Cup winner would be at risk of picking up an injury which could see him ruled out for the first part of the 2024/25 season.
However, denying him the opportunity could perhaps be more dangerous.
As Wenham suggested, Romero is a key player in North London, and the club must keep him happy to ensure he doesn’t seek a move elsewhere.

If that means missing a couple of games at the beginning of next season, then that might be the price Tottenham need to pay to keep a world-class defender happy and on their books.
