Tottenham Expert reacts to ‘lucky’ development after new announcement

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

John Wenham hopes Tottenham don’t “rest on their laurels” despite their favourable draw in the FA Cup.

Spurs will look to end a 15-year trophy drought when they begin their 2023/24 FA Cup campaign with a home tie against Burnley on 5 January.

Ange Postecoglou has the opportunity to become a modern-day Tottenham legend by winning a trophy at the club during his first season in charge, and a home tie against a relegation-threatened team is the ideal start for the Australian.

However, despite the favourable nature of the tie on paper, Wenham is concerned that the club could repeat the same mistakes they have made in previous years and has warned the Spurs players to remain switched on.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “We couldn’t have got a better draw in the FA Cup.

“Burnley will have absolutely zero interest in the competition, they’ve got way bigger priorities with their fight to try and stay in the Premier League.

“I imagine Vincent Kompany will make wholesale changes to the usual Burnley line-up, which is the same line-up that we comfortably put five goals past this season.

“It is a lucky tie for Tottenham, but they can’t rest on their laurels considering some of the teams who they have been put out by in recent years.

“The likes of Norwich, Sheffield United and Middlesbrough have all knocked us out of the cup over the past three or four years, so the proof will have to be in the pudding on this one.

“We’ll have to see if the players can get up for it and get the job done.”

In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou has some January food for thought after one player’s performance against Everton.
