Tottenham Expert praises ‘phenomenal’ Pape Matar Sarr amid Fabrizio Romano contract update

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

John Wenham believes the “phenomenal” Pape Matar Sarr has become one of the most important midfielders at Tottenham with his displays so far this season.

Sarr has been a regular for Ange Postecoglou in the Premier League during the 2023/24 campaign and is on the verge of signing a new long-term deal in north London.

As per Fabrizio Romano via his official X account (31 December), the Senegal international has reached an agreement with Tottenham on a contract which will run until June 2030.

Wenham has been impressed by the 21-year-old this season and believes he has now pushed himself up the pecking order among Tottenham’s midfield options.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “I think we’ve seen in recent weeks, that Sarr has become such a phenomenal player for this team. I feel as if among Tottenham supporters there has always been this feeling that we haven’t been able to see our best midfield three because of all the injuries we’ve had.

“Everyone thought that our strongest midfield three would be James Maddison, Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma. However, I now think that Sarr is staking a claim to be in that strongest three.

“He offers something very different in terms of his ability as a box-to-box midfielder. He covers so much ground in each game and constantly puts pressure on opponents.

“I now believe that Bentancur, Sarr and Maddison would be our strongest midfield, but will we ever see those three together this season? We’re going to be going into February without that being the case and we’ll have to see how much longer that goes on for.”

In other Tottenham news, Wenham wants Spurs’ January business done as soon as possible and has raved about one player linked with the club.
