Tottenham Expert praises ‘clever’ Daniel Levy for Brooklyn Lyons-Foster transfer decision
Daniel Levy made a “very clever” decision to allow Brooklyn Lyons-Foster to leave Tottenham for free after a sell-on clause update emerged, according to John Wenham.
Tottenham announced via their official website on Wednesday 14 January that 23-year-old Lyons-Foster had left the club to join Finnish side HJK Helsinki.
He leaves having never made a senior appearance for Tottenham despite captaining the Under-21s on numerous occasions across 99 appearances at that level.
As per HJK Helsinki’s official announcement (14 February), Spurs might not be receiving any money for the defender, but they have negotiated a sell-on clause and Wenham was full of praise for this bit of business.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “I always really liked Lyons-Foster.
“He was a versatile player who could operate as a central defender and a defensive midfielder, but he never quite got a break.
“His contract was up in the summer, and this just felt like the right time for him to move on from North London.
“What Daniel Levy has done which is really clever, is by allowing him to go now on a free transfer, a sell-on clause has been included in the deal.
“They wouldn’t have got any money for him if he had left as a free agent, so this is smart from Tottenham.
“For Lyons-Foster it is also a good move, he will get some regular game time and hopefully return to one of Europe’s top five leagues in the coming years.”
Levy deserves praise from Tottenham fans
Spurs’ chairman is not always the most popular figure in North London.
However, after a busy January transfer window and the club’s improving financial results, opinions on Levy might be starting to change within the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
While this Lyons-Foster transfer business is nothing groundbreaking, and certainly won’t make a big difference to the club’s finances, they could yet pocket a couple of million for the academy product down the line, which would represent fantastic business.
Once again, it is an example of Levy paying extra close attention to detail to ensure the best results for Tottenham.
