Tottenham expert left ‘beyond frustrated’ by manner of defeat against Aston Villa

John Wenham was left feeling “beyond frustrated” after Tottenham failed to capitalise on their early advantage during the 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa.

Spurs fell to their third consecutive league defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday 26 November as Unai Emery’s side took maximum points from their trip to the capital.

It sees Ange Postecoglou’s men slip out of the Premier League’s top four for the first time since August and leaves the Australian with a growing mountain of problems after such a successful start to life in north London.

Nonetheless, Wenham believes the result could have been a very different story on another day and has expressed his frustration at the manner of the defeat.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “I think we would have comfortably beaten Aston Villa with our full team and despite missing five or six players, I know everyone says Villa are flying at the moment, but we could have still won that game even without our full team.

“We weren’t clinical enough and it was incredibly frustrating that we didn’t add to our lead because obviously in football if you don’t take your chances, it gives the other team a route back into the game.

“Especially a team like Villa who are dangerous on the counter-attack with the pace of Ollie Watkins and Moussa Diaby.

“Overall, I was beyond frustrated that we didn’t capitalise on our fantastic start to the game because there were some really bad misses.

Dejan Kulusevski

“Dejan Kulusevski had a chance where he cut in and had the whole goal to aim at but managed to curl it onto the post, while Son Heung-min could have done a bit better with a few chances that he had.

“I am happy though that we have come away from a home defeat and there’s been no booing, but instead an appreciation of the football that we’ve tried to play.”
