Tottenham Expert: Japhet Tanganga set to fight for his long-term future in loan spell with Millwall
Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…
John Wenham believes Japhet Tanganga will be fighting for his Spurs future during the second half of the season with Millwall after it was revealed that he could become a free agent sooner than initially expected.
Tanganga has joined the Lions on loan for the rest of the season after he was recalled from his disastrous loan spell in Germany with FC Augsburg (Tottenham Hotspur Official Website, 18 January). During his time in the Bundesliga, Tanganga did not make a single appearance.
In 2020, Tottenham announced via their official website (27 July 2020) that the defender had signed a new contract with the club which would run until 2025.
However, as reported by the Evening Standard earlier this month (17 January), the 24-year-old is actually out of contract at the end of this season, with Spurs simply possessing the option to extend his deal by one year until 2025.
In light of this news, Wenham believes Tanganga has no choice but to now prove his worth.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “It was interesting to discover that Tanganga’s contract has the option to extend for the final year and doesn’t run until 2025 as we were told when he signed it.
“Why that is interesting is because it basically means that if he doesn’t perform at Millwall, Tottenham can cut ties with him in the summer, and he can just be released on a free transfer.
“If he does perform, I think Spurs will activate the option and I think they’ll then try to sell him, or perhaps he will be offered one last chance to prove himself.

“Should he struggle to get a run of games, Spurs will cut ties and continue with their rebuild, which has been happening at a rapid pace so far.”
In other Tottenham news, another Spurs defender on loan could also be set to quit the club for good this summer.
