John Wenham believes there are “other issues at play” surrounding Djed Spence’s struggles at Tottenham so far.

Spence joined the North London club from Middlesbrough in a £20million deal (Sky Sports News, 19 July 2022), but has struggled ever since making the move.

The right-wing back has played just four times for Spurs in the Premier League and has been sent out on loan to Stade Rennais F.C. and Leeds United.

His loan move to the Whites didn’t work out, with the 23-year-old being sent back from West Yorkshire midway through the current campaign, and the defender is now set to join Serie A side Genoa.

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported via his personal X account (11 January) that Spence is set to undergo a medical with Genoa as he joins the club on loan as part of Spurs’ deal to bring Radu Dragusin to north London. The Serie A side will have the option to make the deal permanent for £8.6million in the summer, and Wenham is hopeful that the loan move is a success for all parties involved.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “It looks as if Tottenham have managed to offload Spence as part of the deal for Dragusin, which I think is vital, because after coming back to the club, Postecoglou asked him to train with the Under-21s straight away.

“I know some supporters have high hopes for Spence and feel as if he could do well under Postecoglou, but he took a look at him during pre-season and made the decision that he didn’t want him.

“There’s obviously other issues at play. I think even with his failed loan move at Leeds United, I believe there is more to that story than Daniel Farke has let on.

“Genoa have the option to buy him for £8.6million, which is incredibly cheap. If he impresses with the club then who knows, perhaps they will look to snap him up.

“We have paid in the region of £30million to them for Dragusin, so they have turned a big profit on him and could use some of that money for Spence.”

In other Tottenham news, Spurs want to sign a Napoli centre-back as a replacement for Eric Dier, who has been linked with a move away from the club.
