Tottenham Expert delighted by ‘phenomenal’ Fabrizio Romano update on James Maddison ahead of Manchester City clash

Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…

John Wenham believes James Maddison’s return will be a “phenomenal” boost for Tottenham after Ange Postecoglou confirmed the midfielder was “available to start” against Manchester City.

Maddison has been out of action since he was injured in the 4-1 defeat to Chelsea at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday 6 November.

The England international made a tremendous start to life in North London following his £40million switch from Leicester City in the summer (Sky Sports News, 29 June 2023), scoring three goals and providing five assists in his first 11 league matches for Spurs.

Speaking ahead of his side’s FA Cup fourth-round clash with Manchester City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 26 January, Postecoglou has confirmed that Maddison is “available to start” (Fabrizio Romano, 25 January).

In light of this recent update, Wenham has detailed just how big this news is for Tottenham.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “This is a phenomenal boost.

“Throughout the first two or three months of the season, it was looking like Maddison was going to make the Premier League Team of the Season as a starter in that advanced midfield role.

“He was absolutely phenomenal, it wasn’t just his goals and assists, but it was also his leadership and the character he was bringing to the side.

“He seems to thrive as the main man, and I cannot wait to see him back in action.

“I just think it will give the whole ground a huge lift tomorrow, and seeing Maddison back on the pitch with his number 10 shirt on will be massive.”

In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou must continue to wait for the return of two of his other star midfield players.
