John Wenham believes Tottenham have already made an approach for Blackburn Rovers midfielder Adam Wharton after an update emerged in Crystal Palace’s failed pursuit of the player.

The Eagles recently saw an £18.5million bid rejected for the 19-year-old, with Rovers holding out for a higher fee for their talented youngster (Evening Standard, 25 January).

In addition, the Championship side would like to keep the player on loan at Eawood Park until the end of the season, should they agree to a permanent sale.

As previously reported by the Daily Mail (24 January), Tottenham scouts have been keeping a regular eye on the England Under-20 international’s progress.

He has enjoyed a fine campaign so far, starting 22 matches in the league and making four further appearances off the bench, netting two goals and providing three assists in that time.

In light of the news that Blackburn would like to keep hold of the player until the end of the season, Wenham has speculated that Spurs may have had an involvement in this.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “Blackburn Rovers wanted a loan back with the sale, which suggests to me that maybe Tottenham have already enquired about the player and proposed that sort of deal. They have had great success doing that with Pape Matar Sarr and Destiny Udogie, so we know they like to operate that way.

“However, with the figures that have been reported, I just don’t see Tottenham going into that deal anymore.

“This is a player who is totally unproven at the top level. If we were to sign him, it would need to be for much less money. We are talking about a fee in the region of £20million here, that is almost the type of money we paid to sign Radu Dragusin.”

In other Tottenham news, Ange Postecoglou has been handed a boost with a doctor revealing that one injured player has recovered ahead of schedule.
