Tottenham Expert: Ange Postecoglou to axe Timo Werner for FA Cup clash vs Manchester City
Tottenham News is delighted to welcome John Wenham of Lilywhite Rose as our exclusive columnist. Each week, he’ll be giving his expert insight on the biggest talking points at Spurs…
John Wenham believes Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou will axe Timo Werner for the visit of Manchester City in the fourth round of the FA Cup on 26 January.
It has been almost two weeks since Postecoglou’s side were last in action when they drew 2-2 with Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday 14 January.
They will return to action against United’s noisy neighbours on Friday night with a place in the fifth round of the FA Cup up for grabs.
Postecoglou has confirmed ahead of the clash that James Maddison is “available to start”, while Dejan Kulusevski has also “recovered” after missing the clash against Erik ten Hag’s side. (Fabrizio Romano, 25 January).
With this in mind, Wenham believes Postecoglou will make two changes for the visit of City.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “I expect us to go full strength and now that we have heard Maddison is available, I expect him to start as well.
“Kulusevski will come back into the team, and I see Timo Werner being the one to make way. I think we will see a front three of Brennan Johnson, Richarlison and Kulusevski. Apart from that, I think the team will be the same as it was against Manchester United.
“I think we’ll see more of Johnson than Werner going forward. This is a guy that the club invested a lot of money into, so I can see him getting preferential treatment over a loan signing. We need to ensure the progression of our own players.
“If we could win, the momentum from the crowd would be huge, and could perhaps carry us through the rest of the competition so that we can finally get our hands on some silverware.

“Manchester City have played quite a few more games than us this season and no matter what they decide to do, whether they make rotations or not, we just need to go and get the job done.
