Tottenham ‘door opens to appoint Xavi’ after recent developments

Tottenham could now have the opportunity to replace Ange Postecoglou with Xavi after recent developments.

Tottenham were close to perfection during their 1-0 victory against Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final at the Estadio de San Mamés on Wednesday (21 May).

Postecoglou came up with a perfect game plan that would end Spurs’ 17-year trophy drought.

The 59-year-old’s three-man midfield of Pape Matar Sarr, Rodrigo Bentancur and Yves Bissouma overwhelmed United while a late switch to a back-five saw Tottenham hold on for the win.

However, while a huge feat for Postecoglou, there is still plenty of uncertainty over his future.

Xavi could be convinced to join Tottenham after Europa League win

Tottenham will now compete for the UEFA Champions League next season after qualifying for Europe’s elite competition by winning the Europa League final.

Not only does qualification provide Spurs more financial freedom to strengthen their squad this summer, but it could also lead to a higher calibre of manager being attracted to join the North London outfit, such as former Barcelona manager and player Xavi.

That is according to Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News –who believes Xavi could now be tempted to make the move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“Tottenham are going to be in the Champions League,” Wenham said.

“I believe that opens the door to appoint someone like Xavi, whom I’ve mentioned many times before. The fact that we can offer a massive platform as a club, playing in the UEFA Super Cup, playing in the Champions League.

“If Tottenham are going to appoint a high-calibre manager, such as Xavi, this is the time to strike, while the iron is hot.”

Tottenham should focus on another candidate

While Xavi was an excellent player and did well to help guide Barcelona from the pits of peril after financial devastation, Tottenham should still consider other options to replace Postecoglou.

One of Xavi’s main issues at Barcelona was his inexperience. Therefore, while Tottenham might need something new next season, they may want to survey all options before coming to a concrete decision.
