Tottenham: Djed Spence to be sold on by Genoa instantly for ‘huge profit’ as Daniel Levy misses out on millions

Tottenham right-back Djed Spence will make his loan move to Genoa permanent in the summer, according to John Wenham.

Spence joined Genoa on loan for the remainder of the 2023/24 campaign as part of a deal which saw Romanian centre-back Radu Dragusin head the other way.

The 23-year-old has made three appearances so far in the Serie A.

As per Fabrizio Romano (10 January), the Italian side has the option to make Spence’s stay a permanent one for a fee of £8.6million, and Wenham is confident they will activate that option.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, Wenham said: “I believe that Genoa will take up the £8.6million buy-option, which I feel is fair value.

“They’ll simply take it up, and they may even sell Spence immediately thereafter.

“In Italy, it seems quite common that players will join clubs on loan initially, the club buys that player and then instantly sells them for a huge profit.

“As a result, I think that is what Genoa will do here because the value is so low. They got the money from Tottenham for Dragusin, and that could be used to make Spence’s loan permanent.”

Tottenham must take a loss

It is clear that Spence is not in Ange Postecoglou’s plans, and it would be no surprise to see the right-back leave North London this summer.

However, while Genoa stand to make a “huge profit,” for Spurs and Daniel Levy they are set to make a loss on Spence.

Having joined Spurs from Middlesbrough in a £20million deal (Sky Sports News, 19 July 2022), Spence never managed to find his feet at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Tottenham paid an initial fee of £12.5million, with a further £7.5million included in performances-related add-ons.

Considering he made just six appearances in a Spurs shirt, it is unlikely Spence achieved any of those add-ons, but based on the initial fee alone Spurs are still set to post a loss of £3.9million.

That means each time Spence took to the pitch it cost Spurs £650,000, not to mention the wages involved, and this will definitely not be looked back upon as one of Levy’s most successful deals.
