Tottenham: Daniel Levy hailed over Dele Alli despite multi-million Everton development
John Wenham feels that Tottenham got the best possible deal they could for Dele Alli despite confirmation that the North London side are set to miss out on £10million.
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose feels that Daniel Levy was “correct” to sell Alli to Everton when he did.
As per Football London (15 April), Alli made the switch to Everton in January 2022, with a clause in the transfer stating that the Toffees would need to pay Tottenham an extra £10million should the Englishman reach 20 appearances for the club before his two-and-a-half year contract was up.
However, Alli has so far made just 13 appearances for the Blues, and with just six Everton games left until his contract at Goodison Park expires, it has now been confirmed that Spurs won’t be paid that extra fee.
Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – doesn’t think that this will bother Levy as much as it might bother some Spurs supporters.
“I don’t think Tottenham could have got a better deal for Alli at the time than they did,” Wenham said.
“They got a high earner off their books, and I know that there was a potential of earning these extra fees, but to me, that would have just been a bonus.
“The main thing is that they haven’t needed to pay his wages over the past couple of years.
“Therefore, I think Levy made the correct decision on that transfer.”
Daniel Levy saved millions at Tottenham by allowing Dele Alli to join Everton
Alli’s Tottenham contract would have been set to expire this summer had he not joined Everton.
Due to circumstances largely out of his control, the 28-year-old has hardly played any football over the past few years, and Tottenham would have been paying his wages despite him not featuring regularly.

Getting him off the books was therefore probably for the best, and although they are set to miss out on a lucrative £10million payment, the money they have saved on Alli’s salary will more than cover that loss.
