Tottenham: Daniel Levy backed to complete £40m Ivan Toney signing after Sky Sports news
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has been tipped to “play hardball” over a deal for Ivan Toney by Alan Hutton ahead of the summer transfer window.
Reports emerged from Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg (10 April) that the Brentford striker will be available for between £30million and £40million this summer with several of the Premier League’s biggest clubs holding an interest.
Spurs have been linked with the 28-year-old ahead of the summer transfer window as Ange Postecoglou looks to strengthen his forward line with an out-and-out striker having sold Harry Kane to Bayern Munich [Give Me Sport, 6 March].
While Hutton believes that spending £40million on Toney would be a no-brainer for Spurs, he admits that he expects the England international to cost a lot more having previously been labelled a £100million player.
“If they can get him for £40million that would be a great deal,” Hutton told Tottenham News.
“But I don’t think that would be the number, I think it will be a lot more. How do you go from a £100million player to a £40million player? It just doesn’t really work out.
“His value is only what somebody is willing to pay for him and you know Tottenham can play hardball, especially when it comes to Daniel Levy and the finances. He’s run that club really well since day dot.
“So if you’re talking about Ivan Toney for £40million, I think that’s a great deal, to be honest, but for me it’s not going to be that price.”
Tottenham and Daniel Levy tipped to enter summer transfer race for Brentford star Ivan Toney
Spurs have impressed this season under Postecoglou, particularly going forward where they have managed to consistently score plenty of goals without having a natural replacement for Kane in their ranks.

Son Heung-min and Richarlison have impressed when deployed through the middle of the pitch, but both players have missed large portions of the season through international duty and injuries respectively.
Toney’s record in the Premier League cannot be questioned and his playing style has repeatedly drawn comparisons with Kane. It feels as though the 28-year-old would be the perfect centre-forward to slot into Postecoglou’s side.
Whether a deal could be reached for £40million this summer remains to be seen. If Tottenham do act on their interest, you can guarantee that Levy won’t spend a penny more than he has to.
