Tottenham: ‘Critical’ update emerges in new Champions League verdict at Spurs

Tottenham will see it as a missed opportunity financially if they fail to qualify for the Champions League this season, according to Dan Plumley.

Their hopes of securing a place in European football’s elite competition suffered a blow when they were beaten 4-0 by Newcastle United on 13 April, while fourth-placed Aston Villa recorded a 2-0 victory over Arsenal the following day.

The football finance expert admitted that it wouldn’t be “critical” for Spurs if they missed out on Champions League football due to their finances being in good shape.

When asked if it would be a bigger blow for Tottenham to fail in their bid for the top four, he exclusively told Tottenham News: “I think if you’re comparing Spurs to Villa, then yes.

“Spurs will have targeted Champions League as a regular fixture in what they do and their objective season-to-season. We know that’s linked to the stadium as well with the amount of money they can generate.

“They will generate far more from Champions League performances as well compared to other European competitions.

“Again, it’s not critical if they miss out this season, the finances are in relatively good shape all things considered.

“But certainly, if you’re comparing Spurs and Villa as the two that will be likely to take that fourth spot, I think Spurs will feel that it’s a missed opportunity more so than Villa because Villa are very much overachieving this season.”

Would Champions League failure stall Tottenham progress?

It wouldn’t be ideal for Tottenham if they didn’t make it into the Champions League this season after finding themselves in a strong position at various points during the campaign.

But the latest setback has seen them fall three points behind Villa, albeit with a game in hand, as they look to finish in the top-four spots.

Although it wouldn’t be hugely detrimental due to their strong financial performances, Daniel Levy will be hoping they can secure their place in the competition to provide Ange Postecoglou with a bigger transfer budget next season.
