Tottenham: Cristian Romero exit verdict emerges after £60million-plus Premier League transfer news

John Wenham claims Tottenham would only entertain a move for Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite if Cristian Romero were to leave the club.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose believes that Spurs would need to make room in their squad to sign another centre-back.

It comes after Tottenham were linked with a move for Branthwaite (via Daily Mail, 24 March), with Everton set to demand more than £60million for the 21-year-old.

Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – feels that a big-money move for the defender wouldn’t make sense at the moment due to the centre-backs Ange Postecoglou already has at his disposal.

“For a figure of around £60million, I just don’t see us spending that kind of money when we already have three established centre-backs at the club.

“We spent a good amount of money on each of them, and they are all full internationals who are always ready to make a difference for Tottenham.

“As a result, I just think signing Branthwaite is unrealistic from Spurs’ point of view.

“If someone like Romero was to leave the club, perhaps then a move for Branthwaite could potentially happen, but I don’t see Romero leaving anytime soon.”

Could Tottenham sign Jarrad Branthwaite to play under Ange Postecoglou?

Branthwaite has been fantastic for the Toffees this season.

His performances are one of the reasons that Sean Dyche’s side currently look as if they will avoid relegation from the Premier League, which is very impressive considering the Englishman’s age.

However, it is hard to argue that Branthwaite is much better than Romero or Micky van de Ven at this point.

He would cost big money, and Spurs don’t need a big-money centre-back at the moment.

If they are going to spend that type of money, it would be better spent on a statement signing further forward.
