Tottenham business move blasted after Wolves crowd controversy

Tottenham Hotspur boast one of several fanbases who deserve some sympathy over the “corporate” transformation of the Premier League, according to Ian Darke.

The debate on international fans’ priorities has reignited online in recent days, with some supporters in the home sections at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium accused of celebrating Hwang Hee-chan’s goal for Wolves in the 2-2 draw on 29 December.

Spurs have enjoyed a huge global push of support in recent years in a charge led by South Korea, due to captain Son Heung-min’s immense long-term service to the club, a support which can often openly spread to the nation’s other English-based stars such as Hwang.

Locally-based fans who often struggle for tickets or complain of a subdued atmosphere in the stadium often direct their frustration at Daniel Levy and the wider ownership of elite clubs, who seek to make inflated matchday revenue through spectators who may view the occasion as a priority to the result of the match.

“I do have some sympathy with the local supporters, but it’s a general problem that the Premier League has become way more corporate than when it started over 30 years ago,” TV commentator Darke exclusively told Tottenham News.

“It’s a huge international business now, so whether the ‘die-hard’, local Tottenham fans or those of any club like it or not, that’s the way it is. Part of the reason clubs can got the kind of spending power they have is down to the kind of money they are getting from the international TV rights.

“It is a worldwide brand, and although old-school fans might be repelled by that, it’s the reality of the Premier League.”

Tottenham fans urge club to use profits in transfer window

Any Tottenham fans holding the accusation that the club’s hierarchy are taking advantage of increased matchday revenue from overseas supporters will see their prayers answered if Spurs act in the January transfer market.

Ange Postecoglou has pleaded with the board to help him out in strengthening the squad in the winter window, with Spurs wedged in the bottom half of the Premier League table.

The Lilywhites return to N17 on Saturday to take on an in-form Newcastle United side who just overcame Manchester United with some ease.

In other Tottenham news, a former Chelsea defender could be returning to London with Spurs interested.
