Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou slammed over comments made in public
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou may have further damaged the confidence of Timo Werner after his public dressing down, according to Ian Darke.
The TV commentator, speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, has admitted he admires the Spurs boss for his little time for players’ egos, but acknowledged it could wreck Werner’s confidence at the club.
The German international was hooked at half-time of the 1-1 draw against Rangers at Ibrox on Thursday [12 December], as Postecoglou came clean afterwards that his player was nowhere near the level required.
“I rather admire Postecoglou for not caring for players’ egos and it may have been a deliberate ploy to give him a public dressing down,” Darke said.
“On the other hand, throwing Werner under the bus is unlikely to do much for his fragile confidence.”
Tottenham and Timo Werner must make a decision
Werner’s career has stagnated somewhat during his extended loan at Tottenham, appearing to play his best football in his native Germany.
The forward has started just three Premier League games this season and has not featured for his nation in some time, meaning there could be a decision to be made between himself, Postecoglou and the Spurs hierarchy about whether to truncate his loan.

However, the boss has admitted he has “no choice” but to play his out-of-form Leipzig loanee as otherwise he is “pulling kids out of school” with the lack of options available [via Sky Sports, 14 December].
Werner’s only Spurs goal this season came on 30 October during the Carabao Cup victory over Manchester City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. That is quite simply not good enough.
