Tottenham ‘behind the scenes promise’ emerges as midfielder deal signed

George Feeney is thought to have been made particular promises by Tottenham.

Spurs signed Feeney from Glentoran in the summer, with Alasdair Gold reporting via Football London (25 June), that the North London club beat several Premier League sides to his signature.

The 17-year-old has made a positive start to life at Spurs. As a result, he was recently named in the 2024 edition of The Guardian’s Next Generation series (14 October).

As per the club’s official website (21 January), Feeney recently signed his first professional contract with Tottenham.

However, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – has speculated that a professional contract would have been promised to Feeney when he arrived in North London.

“I imagine that this was simply a formality,” Wenham said.

“He was probably promised a professional contract when he first joined the club, to attract him. He would have signed a scholarship agreement with the guarantee of a professional contract.

“Feeney arrived as a striker but has converted into a midfielder, and he has done well to do that. He is a good prospect who needs to keep working hard, and I suppose the plan for him will be to feature as a mainstay in the Under-21s team next season.”

Whether or not Feeney was promised a new contract, Spurs supporters will be happy to see young talent committing their future to the club.

Ange Postecoglou’s side are a mess right now, with frustration beginning to grow in North London. Therefore, fans will just be happy to have something positive to read about.

However, if Spurs continue to struggle, attracting young talent could start to become more difficult.

As a result, the club need to start putting things right in the coming weeks, or they could suffer long-term consequences.
