Surprising new Timo Werner transfer update emerges at Tottenham already
Paul Robinson has admitted that he was initially surprised by Tottenham re-signing Timo Werner on loan ahead of the 2024/25 season.
The club confirmed [28 May] that the 28-year-old German will remain at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next season, with an option to buy, having notched two goals and three assists in the Premier League.
While many have been surprised by the transfer news, Robinson looked deeper into the news, realising that the move is a “no-brainer” for Ange Postecoglou and his team next season.
Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: “I was surprised. But when you look at it, it’s a no-brainer for another loan deal for Timo Werner. I was surprised when he initially came in, as many Spurs fans were, but I think he’s done fairly well.
“He’s great to have as part of the squad. With his attitude and application, you know exactly what you’re going to get from him and he’s got himself amongst the goals a couple of times this season. He’s not going to set the world on fire but he’s a hardworking player and you know what you’re getting every time he comes onto the pitch.
“Next season, with European football taken into account, we saw how much Brighton struggled with the Premier League and European competition, there will be squad rotation and Werner has done enough this season.
“If they were going to spend £30m or £40m on him, I’d say no because it’s too much, but for what Tottenham are doing and how the deal is constructed, it was almost a no-brainer to bring a player of his quality into the squad for next season.
“It’s a deal that works for both the player and Tottenham. I think it’s a shrewd bit of business, in all honesty. It’s not a signing that makes you go, ‘Wow, brilliant, we’ve got that player’ but his attributes and the way he plays, he’s a very good addition to the squad next season.”

Heading into the 2024/25 campaign, having secured Europa League football with a fifth-place league finish, squad depth will be extremely important for Postecoglou.
Werner’s pace already gives him an advantage on the flank, as well as over his Spurs teammates in the squad. Some may be sceptical of the move, but he has proven himself to be a decent addition in just a six-month spell on loan.
