Spence to sign multi-year contract extension amid ‘fantastic’ Tottenham scenes
Tottenham are expected to reward Djed Spence with a new contract over the coming weeks.
Spence’s importance at Spurs has been unexpected, but by no means unwelcome.
The versatile defender stepped up for the North London club last season when Destiny Udogie’s injuries forced the Italian to watch the action unfold from the sidelines. Spence’s unique ability to consistently perform on either flank has made him an important piece in Thomas Frank’s chessboard.
As a result, Tottenham are set to show their gratitude as the last few weeks of the summer unfold.

Tottenham could extend Spence’s stay until 2030
According to Paul O’Keefe via X (30 July), Spence is now in talks with Tottenham over a new and improved contract.
He has been excellent for Tottenham during their pre-season tour and was a formidable force during the 1-0 win against Arsenal in Hong Kong (31 July).

As a result, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes that Spurs could be inclined to extend his contract until 2030.
“I thought Spence was fantastic against Arsenal, playing out of position again,” Wenham said.
“He seems to be able to play on either side to a consistently high level. I think he’s one of those where they recognise his importance for the squad, his ability to play on the right or the left-hand side, and always perform well.
“The previous extension was just to give him a little bit more money; it was only for the one extra year that he signed for. Instead of 2027, his deal was extended to 2028, and obviously, he’s now in talks to extend again, but probably looking at around 2030, that sort of length of contract.”
Spence will be important for Tottenham next season
After a series of loan spells, Spence struggled to consistently break into the Tottenham first team.
However, after biding his time, the defender has proven that he is a player that every team needs to have in their squad.
- 1 July 2018: Spence signs for Middlesbrough from Fulham’s academy
- 1 September 2021: Spence joins Nottingham Forest on loan for the remainder of the season
- 19 July 2022: Tottenham announce the signing of Spence on a five-year contract
- 31 January 2023: Spence joins Ligue 1 side Stade Rennais until the end of the season
- 30 August 2023: Leeds United announce the signing of Spence on a season-long loan, but triggered a break clause to terminate the loan spell in early January. Spence finishes the 2023/24 season on loan at Genoa.
- 19 August 2024: Spence returns to Tottenham and makes his first appearance for the club since January 2023 in their opening Premier League game against Leicester City.
He offers Frank flexibility moving forward and something to spring back on if Udogie or Pedro Porro are injured. With the talent he has displayed at the club, there is even the possibility that he works himself up to being an uncontested starter in the next couple of months.
Therefore, with several trophies on the line, Spence will be an important player next season.
