Sources: Tottenham still want to sign Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams despite December twist

Tottenham remain interested in a move for Athletic Bilbao forward Nico Williams despite the player recently signing a new contract with the La Liga club, Tottenham News has been told.

Williams has been in fine form this season, scoring three goals and providing eight assists in 16 league appearances.

The 21-year-old has played 15 times as a left winger and once on the right, also featuring twice in the Copa Del Rey, scoring once and making two assists in the cup competition.

The Spain international, who has two goals in 11 caps, came through Athletic’s youth ranks after joining the club from CA Osasuna in 2013, and he has already made 103 appearances for the first team, scoring 16 goals and providing 17 assists in total.

As per the Spanish club’s official website (1 December), the pacey wideman recently put pen to paper on a new deal which will keep him at the club until 2027.

Nonetheless, a source with close links to Spurs has told Tottenham News the North London side have not been put off by this development, and remain interested in making a move for the wonderkid.

Williams has been described to Tottenham News as “electric” and a player who could offer a dangerous threat for Spurs on the left with Brennan Johnson offering pace of his own on the right.

Ange Postecoglou will be keen to continue adding options to his squad at Hotspur Way.

Tottenham recently announced the signing of RB Leipzig forward, Timo Werner (Tottenham Hotspur Official Website, 9 January) on a six-month loan deal, with the German boasting plenty of pace of his own and being able to play across the front three positions.

Wingers are an important component in Postecoglou’s attack-minded system, with pace a particularly important trait in the wide areas for the Australian.
