Sources: Tottenham set sights on signing the ‘next Christian Eriksen’ Arthur Vermeeren
Tottenham have set their sights on signing Belgian playmaker Arthur Vermeeren from Royal Antwerp, Tottenham News has been told.
Despite only being 18 years old, Vermeeren has already played 65 times for Royal Antwerp and last season he was a key part of the club’s first Pro League title success in 66 years last season.
A recruitment source with links to Belgian football has told Tottenham News that Vermeeren is also wanted by a host of other Premier League clubs, and scouts are talking about him being the next Christian Eriksen due to the way he plays.
Eriksen played 305 times for Tottenham, scoring 69 goals and providing 90 assists for the club, and was a part of Mauricio Pochettino’s side which reached the UEFA Champions League final for the first time in Spurs’ history in 2019.
A recruitment source with links to Spurs detailed to Tottenham News that Vermeeren is a technically gifted player with a great passing ability, although did reveal that he lacks an element of intensity and toughness.
Nonetheless, he went on to describe the midfielder as a “serious talent” who would only get better with time.
Postecoglou would likely welcome the signing, especially in January, considering the current state of his midfield.
Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr could both be unavailable until mid-February as they compete at AFCON, while James Maddison remains sidelined with an ankle injury.
Although the return of Rodrigo Bentancur in the 3-1 home win against Bournemouth on New Year’s Eve was certainly a boost, Spurs’ midfield remains depleted, with an FA Cup third-round tie against Burnley on Friday 5 January at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next on the agenda.
