Sources: Tottenham plot Kalvin Phillips move – he’s ready to go

Tottenham are poised to make Kalvin Phillips their number-one midfield target for the January transfer window, sources have told Tottenham News.

Fabrizio Romano reported on Thursday (21 December) that Ange Postecoglou will “100 per cent” sign a new centre-back next month but Tottenham News understands that if the Spurs boss also pursues a midfielder, 28-year-old Manchester City outcast Phillips will be a top priority.

The former Leeds midfielder has played just four times in the Premier League this season and is ready to leave Etihad Stadium in the upcoming transfer window.

Tottenham News has been told by a recruitment source with links to the North London club that Newcastle and Juventus are also interested in Phillips but it’s been mooted that those close to the England international are advising he stays in the Premier League instead of making the move to Serie A.

Spurs’ midfield options have been decimated in recent weeks due to injuries and suspensions.

Postecoglou will be without Rodrigo Bentancur, James Maddison and potentially Giovanni Lo Celso for this weekend’s clash with Everton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium while Yves Bissouma is suspended after being red-carded in the win against Nottingham Forest last week.

Pape Matar Sarr has also missed two games within the last month due to injury and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s form has been called into question amid speculation linking him with a move away from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in January [The Mirror].

Phillips has endured a miserable spell at Manchester City after joining Pep Guardiola’s side from Leeds United for £42million in July 2022.

The Leeds-born midfielder may have been a part of a treble-winning squad in his first season in Eastlands but he’s played just 31 times in all competitions for the Citizens, starting just twice in the Premier League.
