Sources: Tottenham acted quickly to seal new Pape Matar Sarr contract after interest in midfielder had emerged
Tottenham acted quickly to tie Pape Matar Sarr down to a new deal in north London after interest in the midfielder from elsewhere emerged, Tottenham News has been told.
Sarr recently signed a new deal with Spurs which will keep him at the club until 2030.
Tottenham announced the 21-year-old’s contract extension via their official X platform (2 January).
Things accelerated quickly with Sarr’s new deal. Reports first emerged that the Senegal international midfielder was close to signing a contract extension on New Year’s Eve when The Athletic’s Tottenham correspondent Jack Pitt-Brooke revealed the news via his personal X account (31 December).
Just two days later, the new long-term contract was announced, and Tottenham News has since learned that interest from other clubs in the midfielder had emerged, which led to the north London side acting swiftly to tie him down.
A recruitment source with links to Spurs told Tottenham News that Sarr’s bright performances this season under Ange Postecoglou had attracted interest from other clubs.
The box-to-box midfielder has been one of Spurs’ most important players this season, starting 16 of the club’s 20 Premier League games, scoring two goals and providing two assists.
His most recent goal came last time out, in Tottenham’s 3-1 victory against Bournemouth on New Year’s Eve at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

There was more good news for Sarr this week, as Postecoglou confirmed that he was fit and had joined up with Senegal to compete at the African Cup of Nations this month.
Sarr came off with a suspected hamstring injury against the Cherries in the first half, but Spurs’ 58-year-old head coach revealed that the midfielder was “fine” when asked for an update in his pre-match press conference ahead of the FA Cup clash with Burnley on Friday 5 January (Football London, 4 January).
In other Tottenham news, the club have set their sights on signing a player who has been dubbed the next Christian Eriksen.
