Son situation at Tottenham has ‘evolved’, Ange hailed for decision
Son Heung-min has seen his role change at Tottenham Hotspur and has taken 18 months to “evolve” into his new responsibility, according to Ian Darke.
The departure of Harry Kane left Son – whose contract expires in 2025 as dialogue continues – without his lethal attacking partner in the summer of 2023, with the Spurs attack changing during Ange Postecoglou’s reign in both identity and style of play.
The skipper has been the constant through all of that and TV commentator Darke, speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, believes he is now capable of his very best standards.
“I think recently Son started to run into his best form again, because him at his most dynamic and dazzling is a big plus. I don’t think earlier this season he was, and he had a period out injured as well,” Darke explained.
“He’s starting to turn it on, and he’s being managed well with the half-time withdrawal at Southampton in the busy festive period.
“His situation has evolved at Tottenham. He and Harry Kane together produced the most goals in the Premier League as a partnership with assists as well, and I think he’s taken a year-and-a-half to evolve into his current role in the squad. I think that’s now a little less important than it was when Kane was around. Now he’s dovetailing with the new attacking group.”
Son delivering recently for chaotic Tottenham side
While Tottenham games under Postecoglou often throw up plenty of goals at both ends, Spurs were left frustrated by Nottingham Forest who were resolute in claiming a 1-0 win at the City Ground on Boxing Day.
This was Son’s second-straight game without a goal contribution after not registering a goal nor an assist in the 6-3 defeat by Liverpool, but in his previous 16 appearances, the South Korean captain had scooped seven goals and seven assists.
The Lilywhites’ adored number seven is now part of an attacking group which includes Dominic Solanke, Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, Brennan Johnson and Timo Werner among others, looking to retain the firepower he has always had during his near-decade innings in North London.
In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou urges the board to help him strengthen the squad in January.
