Son Heung-min exit ‘to convince Romero and Bentancur to remain at Tottenham’
Son Heung-min could have a massive role in Tottenham’s upcoming season, even if he is miles away from Hotspur Way.
Almost a decade after arriving in North London, Son finally won a trophy at Tottenham as the Lilywhites defeated Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final.
Despite this, Tottenham could now cut ties with Son, whose best days might already be behind him.
However, the 32-year-old’s exit could leave one final parting gift for Spurs.

Son’s exit to leave the captain’s armband free for Romero
Romero and Bentancur have been linked with exits from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer.
A transfer to Spain has looked like the likely outcome for both parties, with Atletico Madrid interested in the Spurs duo.
| All Competitions 2024/25 | Appearances | Goals | Assists | Minutes |
| Rodrigo Bentancur | 44 | 2 | 1 | 2.976′ |
| Cristian Romero | 26 | 1 | 2 | 2.102′ |
As key elements of Tottenham’s Europa League victory and their future project, Romero and Bentancur’s departures would be a big blow for the North London club.
However, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes Son’s departure could have a knock-on effect, and lead to both players remaining at Spurs.
“If Son was to depart this summer, Romero might be named captain,” Wenham said.
“Therefore, that could convince him to potentially remain at Tottenham. A lot of these things are like jigsaw puzzles. Ben Davies and Son are good friends. Therefore, if Son leaves, maybe Davies does too.
“However, that could lead to Romero remaining as Tottenham captain, which could convince Bentancur, who is a great friend of Romero, to remain at Tottenham too. I think there are a lot of factors at play which are heavily linked to each other here.”

Ange Postecoglou’s future could have a huge impact on Romero
While the departure of the current Spurs skipper could indirectly convince Romero and Bentancur to remain, Postecoglou’s potential exit might change things.
The 59-year-old did the impossible by delivering silverware to Tottenham in a Europa League campaign which had the full backing of the players.
Now, Postecoglou has won more than a trophy. He has won the hearts and support of his players, whom he inspired to put everything on the line against United.
This level of admiration for a manager cannot be bought, and if he were to leave Hotspur Way this summer, Romero and Bentancur may not be the only ones to follow.
