Son Heung-min Exclusive: Ex-PGMOL chief blasts Tottenham star incident v Everton

Keith Hackett doesn’t think Tottenham should have had a penalty in the first half of their defeat to Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Spurs were humiliated in their latest Premier League bout, losing 3-2 at the hands of goal-shy Everton to pile further pressure on manager Ange Postecoglou.

Tottenham did have a shout for a penalty in the first half when it was only 1-0 after Son Heung-min went down in the penalty area under a challenge by Jarrad Branthwaite.

And while there was definitely contact, former FIFA and Premier League referee Hackett doesn’t believe there was enough in it for a penalty kick, claiming Son made the most out of Branthwaite’s challenge.

“It’s a clumsy challenge and would have been a harsh penalty kick,” Hackett told Tottenham News.

“Frankly, Son has gone to ground too easily.”

Tottenham desperation on show v Everton

Son’s form has been widely criticised this season.

The South Korea star has struggled in front of goal and just genuinely looks to be off the pace.

Either that, or he’s checked out.

The 32-year-old has been one of the best attacking players to grace the Premier League in the last decade but as with all good things, it looks as though his golden streak at Spurs is coming to an end.

Son’s contract has been extended until the end of next season but it remains to be seen if he’ll see that out when chances of winning silverware seem to be very few and far between.

It’s also unlikely he’ll want to spend his twilight years playing for a club where the mood is just so toxic right now.

Son will always be remembered well by Tottenham fans once his days in North London are up.

But maybe it’s best for all parties now if he moves on to pastures new at the end of this season.
